A.L.Vijay's Diya feat. Sai Pallavi faces story theft charges

Adding to the list of story-theft charges in the Tamil film industry (remember ThaandavamKaththi, Aruvi and more recently Kaala), director A.L. Vijay's latest release Karu that has Sai Pallavi playing the lead has come under the scanner for the same reason. In an interview to a leading news daily, an upcoming director by the name Chandrakumar has alleged charges of plagiarism against the Lyca Productions backed film. His statement on the topic goes,

"I worked as an assistant to the director Rajakumar. In 2015, I wrote a story with the theme that abortion is a sin and how an unborn victim avenges those who destroyed her after five years of life. I narrated the story to a Sri Lankan producer with the help of a friend named Anbalagan. The producer too agreed to to the film. Director Rajakumaran agreed to act in my film. Just when I was happy about receiving the 'advance', Diya movie reviews hit my heart like a thunder.
The story of my film was released as Diya, and that story was what was written in the newspaper. I was so tensed...I decided to watch the film...The movie only had some changes. The base story of an aborted child's soul killing those responsible for her death - from relatives to doctor and compounder is mine. Many scenes in the film were exactly how I had envisioned them for my story...
I have cell phone records of discussing this story with friends from about 2 years ago, and records of talking to the friend Anbalagan. There are a lot of friends, including director Raju Kumaran, to testify that this story is mine..I do not want anything but for the world to know that Diya is a plagiarised story.
Director Vijay and I have no connection. But the story of the film he directed is mine. I am the owner of Diya's story. The story may have spread from different people to director Vijay. But that doesn't mean I will withhold from claiming what is mine".

Incidentally, the story and theme of Diya are very similar to the lesser known Hindi film Gauri: The unborn (2007) which was also remade in Malayalam as Kana Kanmani with actors Jayaram and Padmapriya in 2009. Hence it came as no surprise that one of the producers of the film, G. Dhananjayan took no time to point out the same, once Chandrakumar's statements were made public.
