"I Thought He Was a Psycho" - Vijay Sethupathi Recounts How He Became Friends with Mysskin

Vijay Sethupathi shared a candid and warm account of his friendship with director Mysskin at the Train teaser and audio launch, revealing that he had once avoided the filmmaker entirely before becoming one of his most ardent admirers.

Sethupathi admitted that Mysskin's eccentric personality had put him off initially. "Even after I became a hero, he called me for a film. But I always thought he was a bit of a psycho," he said with a laugh, adding that he would visit the director's office only to make excuses about having no dates.

Everything changed after he watched Mysskin's Psycho. Sethupathi called the director immediately and what was meant to be a brief chat turned into an eight-hour conversation about cinema. Mysskin gifted him a watch that night, and their friendship was born. They first worked briefly on Pisaasu 2 before Train brought them together for a full collaboration.

Describing the atmosphere on the Train sets as "like a wedding," Sethupathi praised Mysskin's unique daily reward system where the best-performing actor and a technician each received Rs 1,000 — with the recognition presented in front of the entire unit. "The money isn't important — that's secondary," he said, noting it was the public acknowledgement that motivated everyone. "Every single day, the set felt like a celebration," he added.

While audiences will eventually watch Train as a thriller, Sethupathi said making it was "a very romantic journey" filled with cherished memories.

Directed by Mysskin and produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu under V Creations, Train also stars Shruti Haasan, Narain and Sampath Raj, with Mysskin composing the music. A release date is yet to be announced.
