Sundarapandian Preview - SWOT Analysis

Sundarapandian Preview - SWOT Analysis

Sundarapandian is getting ready for release this Friday. The movie is produced and acted by M. Sasikumar. After the hattrick hit of Subramaniapuram (as Director), Pasanga (as Producer) and Naadodigal (as Hero), Sasikumar was touted as the next big thing in Tamil Cinema. With just one flop in the form of Eesan, Sasikumar's high-flying career graph crash landed. Later, Poraali provided a temporary relief as it cushioned the drop. Now, all eyes on Sundarapandian to see if Sasikumar can pick up the pieces from the fall and rise again...

Strengths

  • After watching the Sundarapandian trailers, fans call it  "Naadodigal Part 2". Surprisingly, the movie didn't capitalize on the brand value, if it indeed takes-off from where Naadodigal left-off.

Weakness

  • Sundarapandian has been a low key affair so far with very low pre-release buzz.
  • Apart from mildly popular 'Rekkai Mulaithen', rest of the songs have not found much traction at all. In current times, it is mandatory for at least one song to be a rage among masses to get a respectable opening.
  • Deja Vu feeling after watching the trailer as Sasikumar's dress, looks and acting reminds strongly of his past movies.

Opportunities

  • Sundarapandian gets a solo Release with no competition at all. Sundarapandian could do well in B centers and Interiors similar to Poraali, which was profitable in places like Coimbatore.

Threats

  • Total of 3 new Tamil movies lined up for September 21 followed by a big release, Thaandavam, on September 28. If Sundarapandian doesn't garner solid word of mouth on opening day and weekend, the movie may be quickly forgotten by next week.

Final Words

The bug which attacked many talented directors like SJ Suryah, Karu Palaniappan, Cheran has bitten Sasikumar as well. Sasikumar who came in to the industry with such clear vision and purpose appears to have lost track. Sasikumar the director, has been a truly inspirational person for local film-makers from interiors of TN as well as Hindi cult film-makers like Anurag Kashyap (director of Gangs of Wasseypur). In fact, Anurag credited Sasikumar for returning to his roots after watching Subramaniapuram. Due to the multiple avatars donned by Sasikumar, it is sad that we are slowly losing a good director in Tamil Cinema. Hope the result of Sundarapandian will help us recover the talented director again.
