MovieCrow Box Office Report – May 22 to 24
Arulnithi's Demonte Colony opened to positive reviews last weekend and there were few hardly known releases as well, that bombed at the box office right away. Check out the box office ranking of Tamil movies in Chennai during last weekend.
Amidst the usual loud horror comedy films, Demonte Colony has managed to stand out from the crowd, thanks to the intelligent treatment from debutant director Ajay Gnanamuthu. Although the scary moments are less, the movie received thumbs up from the audience for being a neatly packaged thriller. The movie's good opening proves that horror genre still remains as a safe bet in Tamil.
Jyothika's comeback film 36 Vayadhinile was rock solid in its second weekend. In fact, many of the multiplexes had shifted the film to their bigger screens, owing to great support from the family audience.
3. Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai
Director SP Jananathan's Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai saw a slight dip in screen count and occupancy levels. The reason cited is that the movie's serious screenplay has received mixed response from the audience.
Other Movies
Kanchana 2 continued its successful run across major multiplexes with housefull shows, while India Pakistan was running across a handful of screens, with limited support. Kamal Haasan's Uttama Villain was almost replaced across many screens, while OK Kanmani and Vai Raja Vai were screened across a few multiplexes.
Upcoming week's releases
Suriya's Masss, directed by Venkat Prabhu, is expected to take a monstrous opening on May 29.
