Retro Music Review: Santhosh Narayanan excels in trademark style!

Ramesh Kannan

Love Detox:

Love Detox owes a measure of its success to Punya Selva's commendable vocal performance. However, the falters in sustaining its charm beyond the initial verses, and the heavily processed of Suriya's vocals further detracts from its overall impact Santosh Narayanan's arrangements hold the song till it lasts.

Etharkaga Marubadi:

Punya Selva delivers a solo song, Etharkaga marubadi, in the album, which opens with a soulful violin segment followed by Punya's heartfelt vocals. Santosh, known for excelling in this genre, has previously created numerous remarkable melancholy tracks. However, this particular composition feels somewhat lacking, working well in parts but not as a cohesive piece. Nonetheless, the violin solos are beautifully conceived throughout the track.

The One:

Santosh excels in the remaining tracks from the album. The One is invigorating and dynamic track where every element comes together seamlessly, from Sid Sriram captivating opening section Shan Vincent De Paul's compelling rap segments. Santosh's arrangements evoke memories of one of the most iconic background score portions in Karnan—the police station attack scene. At one point, even the lyrics go as 'Veeranam ivan karnanukke Appan'.

Kannadi Poove

Despite the common concern of composers performing most tracks themselves these days, Kannadi Poove offers enough to appreciate, allowing one to overlook this minor grievance. The track begins with a captivating double bass sound, followed by Santosh Narayanan's sincere vocals. He enriches the background with exquisite string sections and orchestral arrangements.

Kanimaa

Santosh Narayanan concludes with the crowd-pleasing Kanimaa, ensuring that the track incorporates sufficient elements to evoke a sense of joy while listening. The video and choreography further enhance the track's appeal. Santosh Narayanan delivers commendable vocal portions that align well with the track's mood.

Verdict: Santosh Narayanan excels in Retro with his trademark musical style, and Karthik Subburaj ensures that he gets the best from Santosh.
