Happening and Vibrant but also emotionally distant!

Retro is a happening film, and Suriya is in fine form. The indulgent, wacky and mass world that Karthik Subbaraj sets Retro in, works till the stakes aren't high. It is towards the end, that this treatment doesn't gel with the serious topics that are discussed, and we are emotionally at a distance from the screen. (more)

Suriya, Karthik's overstuffed film stumbles between eras and ideas

Retros story progresses in chapters and the first two chapters Love and Laughter are its weakest and there lies its biggest problem. While the film is technically sound, and composer Santhosh Narayanans music and songs do their thing, Retro suffers from schooling its audience. It not only shows but uses its characters to spell out everything to the audience.(more)

Suriya shines like the sun again but Karthik Subbaraj's film is an uneven ride

Retro, on the whole, is a good effort by director Karthik Subbaraj but the choppy screenplay, with too many tracks, prevents it from being a great one. Suriya shines in the film as does Pooja Hegde and this love track is what keeps us rooting for the two as well as Retro.(more)

Suriya powers an entertaining, layered, but slightly shaky Karthik Subbaraj film

While Karthik doesn't really spell out a lot of things in the film, it is clear what he has tried with Retro. He has delivered a film that aims to showcase the best of Suriya, and the actor has reciprocated by giving it his all. He has delivered a film that is high on quirks, and even higher on randomness. He has delved into a genre that he hasn't tried yet, and it is quite a bold experiment.(more)

Suriya shines, script sinks

Retro is a love-action drama that clicks in parts but falters in execution. Suriyas performance and the music are definite strengths, but the film is let down by its muddled storytelling and an underwhelming second half. What starts with promise eventually fizzles out. Apart from Suriya loyalists, others may find it difficult to stay invested. Watch it with tempered expectationsif at all.(more)
