Ever since the plotline of Jailer was outed to the public, even before the release of the film, Tamil movie buffs have been drawing similarities between the stories of Jailer (2023) and Vikram (2022). Jailer an action comedy starring Rajinikanth in the lead is about a former police officer going after his son's killers, getting help from old acquaintances on the way. 

Vikram starring Kamal Haasan on the other hand is an action thriller, and is about a former undercover agent going after his son's killers, with help from old friends and acquaintances. Jailer director Nelson Dilipkumar recently addressed the burning question of whether he knew of the similarities, and how did him and Vikram director Lokesh Kanagaraj handle the situation. 

“I told the story of Jailer to Lokesh (Kanagaraj) long ago, and he asked me to see Vikram. He told me these are the things in the film, and I told him the take-off might be similar, but Jailer goes on a different tangent. I didn’t consciously do it, but if they (Jailer and Vikram) end up being similar, I didn’t want to change anything… because if we change something it might lead to some problems somewhere else (in the script). I thought people would enjoy both (movies) as long as they were good. Vikram was released last June, I told the story last January.” - Nelson Dilipkumar to Galatta Plus

 

Jailer produced by Sun Pictures is currently on day 27 of its theatrical run. The film is said to have grossed a whopping Rs. 600 Cr+ in box-office collections worldwide.
