Jailer Review : Baasha Returns

The director masterfully crafts a story that keeps the audience invested till the very end. It is a testament to Rajinikanth's magnetic screen presence and ability to anchor even the most incredulous scenes. By the end of first half, Jailer had all the elements to become Rajini's all time best movies. However, the pace slacks and settles to a decent watch worthy movie by the time it reaches the climax. Rajinikanth returns to supreme form in Nelson Dilipkumar's film

Jailer is a film that celebrates Rajinikanth for what he is. There are sparks of Nelsons intelligence in Jailer which makes it quite enjoyable.(more)

It's director Nelson's show in the first half, superstar Rajini takes the baton in the second half

Rajnikanth is not a hero anymore; he is a superstar and this film shows him exactly as that. Fans get to see plenty of whistle-worthy Rajini-ism and nothing more. The father-son bond, which is essentially the heart of the story, is merely touched upon and leaves it to the audience to assume that the father and son are very close. There isnt a single emotional moment between the two. It is disappointing to see a talent like Ramya Krishnan with nothing much to say or emote in the film. Vasanth Ravi has one single expression throughout the film. Vinayakan puts up an impressive show with his bloodshot eyes. Composer Anirudh Ravichanders background music elevates the film; the songs however, border on average.(more)

Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar rediscover alchemy of a good masala film

A glaring problem with UA-certifed Jailer is of course its violence. Its a blood bath, quite literally. The issue is not the violence but the certificate. It deserves an A for all those slash-and-splatter scenes. And, it also deserves an A for being a wholesome entertainer.(more)

Nelson's 'Jailer' is yet another watered-down attempt at fan service, but Rajinikanth is solid and Vinayakan is superb.

Rajinikanth is in fine form, doing what he does best against the backdrop of Anirudh's background score. The interval point is not pushed enough, but it's not bad either. But there are passages where we see what this film could have been had it not had to pander to star image: say, during a scene where two drunk men follow the Rajinikanth character. I did not see that payoff coming. And heck, there's a sword attack on a child and bodies being dissolved in acid. But most of the menace is handled by Vinayakan, who is superb as the villain. The cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan shoots the actor in warm, bronze tones and with many, many close-ups that make him seem like a maniacal head without a body. What a presence Vinayakan has, whether it's sitting cross-legged on a man he is killing or smoking on top of a barrel of acid! He deserved a better graph and Rajinikanth deserves a better movie.. Rajinikanth Is A Star For All Seasons And All Regions

The guest stars do their bit and move on. It is left to Rajinikanth to shoulder the weight of the erratic script. Playing an age-appropriate character, the septuagenarian star pulls his weight all the way though in a role that, despite the absence of the customary vim and vigour, fits him like a glove. Jailer does intermittently have you in its grip because Rajinikanth has it in to whip up a storm even at half tilt. (more)

It Is Rajinikanth Looking At The Phenomenon He Created In Wide Angle & Somewhere Accepting His Age Finally, But Rajni Style Doesn't Fade Even An Inch

Nelson has definitely taken a huge risk in Jailer to change the blueprint of how a Rajinikanth movie should look. Not many can dare to break a mold that was so successful for a very long time. But we recently saw a saturation in that too and looks like even Nelson did. This is the superstars best work in a long while.(more)
