Jailer Audio Launch Highlights: Rajinikanth, Nelson, Anirudh & More

The audio launch event of Rajinikanth's upcoming movie Jailer has been going on at the Nehru indoor stadium at Chennai, and highlights from the evening are being uploaded by several handles of the Sun Network group on social media. A compilation of the same follows:

1. Composer Anirudh whose music for Jailer has played a key role in hyping the release of the film, delighted the fans with his live performance of the fan-favourite Hukum.

2. Rajinikanth upon entry into the venue was seen happily giving a peck on both of Anirudh's cheeks [Rajinikanth is Anirudh's paternal uncle-in-law, and the music composer been close to Rajini and his family since childhood. The composer has since reacted to the gesture]. Rajini also for the first time was accompanied by his elder brother Sathyanarayana Rao Gaikwad, who rumour has it will be making his acting debut at the age of 80.

3. Rajinikanth began his highly awaited speech by sharing the story of his first meeting with Jailer director Nelson Dilipkumar. Rajini had wanted to meet the filmmaker at 10: 00 AM but after learning of Nelson's habit of waking up late, he fixed the meeting time as 11: 30 AM. Nelson was late to the meeting and showed up around noon. But the director did not hesitate to take advantage of the formalities. So when Rajini asked if he would like to have anything, Nelson replied with, "Please arrange for (/I could do with) a good coffee."

4. The director's quirks did not end there. On the first day of Jailer shooting, once the first shot was done, Rajinikanth was taken aback by an unusual question from his filmmaker. Apparently Nelson Dilipkumar went up to Rajini and asked about his first love out of the blue. When Rajini asked the reason behind the same, Nelson replied with, "This is to charge myself."

5. Rajinikanth addressed the elephant in the room by speaking about why he decided to stick with Nelson even after wide negative responses for Beast (starring Vijay in the lead). Rajini said,

"We had shot the promo and announced the film (Jailer then as Thalaivar 169). Beast released and didn't do well. I had a lot of calls from distributors to change the director. We all had an internal meeting with the Sun Pictures/ TV team who told me 'it’s true sir, reviews are bad for Beast but there’s no loss for distributors'."

Rajinikanth also said that after Annaatthe, he was fed up listening to scripts because everything was either on the lines of Annamalai or Baasha, or big budget productions or very different developements from the one-lines that were narrated.

6. Rajini finally addressed an even bigger the elephant in the room i.e. Hukum lyrics penned by Super Subu (He can be seen touching Rajinikanth's feet upon the actor's entry into the venue in the video above). The actor said that when he saw the lyrics for the first time, he too thought it was 'thaarumaaru' (A Tamil expression for out of the world/a banger). Rajinikanth said that he requested for the removal of the 'Superstar' word from the lyrics and said,

"The Superstar title has always been an issue...I had asked to remove it long back..At that time people said Rajinikanth is scared..I am afraid of only 2 people - one is God and the other is good human beings."

7. It is no secret that the lyrics of Hukum were conceived to be against actor Vijay by a section of the Tamil internet. Rajinikanth addressed this and said, "In Birds, crow disturbs everyone. Eagle never disturbs everyone. Whenever crow disturbs eagle, eagle doesn’t do anything, it just goes to the next stage. Crow can compete to a stage, but never can fly higher. Now just because I've spoken crows and eagles, people will start assuming on (social) media that I spoke about this person or that person. You can't find dogs that don't bark. Similarly you cannot find mouths that won't complain. We should mind out business and keep going. Understand?"

8. Being a veteran who's had a 48-year long career in the film business alone [Rajinikanth started off as a bus conductor in Karnataka and has never been shy of acknowledging his roots], 72 year old Rajini had advices that included one for his producer Kalanithi Maran. To the general audience he said, "It's easy to say that you are an heir of a big man, but it is difficult to retain that name. Rajini also shared how the the biggest mistake of his life is alcoholism. He said,

"If I had not had alcohol in life, today whatever I've done, I would have been a much better star and person in life...I am saying not to avoid it totally. Have alcohol when you have fun. Don’t drink regularly. It will spoil the health and happiness of everyone around you If you drink your whole life will be a problem. Your parents, your family and everyone will suffer because of it. Don’t drink.."

To the Sun Pictures head he said, "Kalanithi Maran should put good players in Sunrisers Hyderabad [IPL] team. I feel bad seeing Kavya Maran (Kalanithi's daughter) like that on TV during (cricket) matches." [Rajini is referring to Kavya's gloomy reactions from SRH's loosing matches going viral on the internet]

9. Rajiikanth reiterated his dreams for the Tamil film industry to grow bigger and better. Citing how the success of KGF and Kantara brought limelight to the Kannada film industry like never before, and how the success of films like Baahubali, Pushpa and RRR is bringing laurels to the Telugu film industry, Rajini said,

"Keeping aside the jealousies and internal competition, we should make our Tamil films win big. We should bring our industry together. Only if big heroes' movies run, theatres will earn, everyone will earn. Everyone are brothers here. We should make every film run."

10. Director Nelson who has previously stated that it was actor Vijay who gave him the idea of narrating a script to Rajinikanth during Beast shooting, retold the story on stage. He also said that Rajinikanth respected him immensely addressing the director only as 'Sir', and there was never a single day where Rajini was negative on Jailer sets.

11. Another impressive incident that director Nelson's assistant shared of Rajinikanth from the Jailer sets, "During shooting, an actor didn't perform well, so we asked him to leave the set. Rajini sir called one of the ADs during the afternoon break and suggested that he might perform well if given a chance, reminding us that he (the dismissed actor) must have come here with dreams. Rajini said 'Let him stay in the frame without any action, and I'll stand beside him touching his shoulders in the next scene'".

12. Sun Pictures and Kalathi Maran are frequent collaborators of actor Rajinikanth. The producer has at all times spoken highly of the star-actor and the Jailer audio launch was no different.

"Before me, my grandfather Kalaignar (the late DMK honcho and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi) was a fan of Rajinikanth. Now, I enjoy him as a fan. The generation after me i.e. my daughter will next love him. As the lyricist Super Subbu said (in Hukum - Thalaivar Alappara song) not just the fathers but over 5 generations have been his (Rajini's) fans. Rajini sir is a record maker not a breaker. Rajini is his own competition. There is no one else.

Rajini Sir is now 72 years old.  Still producers are lining up (to do a movie with him). If producers line-up in a similar manner for you as well, then you too say 'I am the next Superstar'. Till then as far as Indian film industry is concerned, Rajiinikanth is the only Superstar. That is the truth."

To tell you the truth, I haven't seen Jailer yet. But everyone who saw the film said it was great. It was Rajini sir who first heard about the story of this film. I asked him how the story was. He replied, 'The story is great... I have faith in Nelson.' The last time he told me this was for Enthiran (2010 film directed by Shankar, first offered to Rajinikanth, famously rejected by Shah Rukh Khan before Rajini decided to do it himself)."

Jailer releases in theaters worldwide on August 10, 2023. Prime Media and Ayngaran International have announced that US bookings for the movie are currently open.
