Lyca Productions has officially announced that the sequel to 2022's biggest Tamil film i.e. the Mani Ratnam directed Ponniyin Selvan, will be releasing under the title PS-2 on April 28, 2023 [Friday]. The release date is exactly 4 months away and comes right on the heels of Tamil New Year week that month. 

Ponniyin Selvan: I aka PS-1 ended with Jayam Ravi's titular character perceived to be dead, his elder brother Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) setting out to avenge his former lover Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) for the same, and the rest of Ponniyin Selvan's family and the Chola clan being devastated by the news. 

The first glimpse of PS-2 however shows Ponniyin Selvan lurking in disguise among common citizens, and a gravely injured Vanthiyathevan (Karthi), who was also caught in the ship believed to have sunk the Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman. 

The mystery behind older Aishwarya Rai's older character is also expected to be unveiled in PS-2. The Ponniyin Selvan movies are based on a 1950s fictional novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, that the author had penned as serialized stories initially based on the real life Tamil King Arunmozhi Varman. 

The book is considered one of Tamil literature's best works and Mani Ratnam is the first Kollywood personality to successfully adapt it into a film. More about Ponniyin Selvan story, characters and actors playing them.
