OTT This Week: Movies and Series to watch

Digital streaming platforms are blessed with new content almost on a daily basis, and here is a cherry-pick of movies and series to watch from the new OTT releases this week:

1. Suzhal: The Vortex has a lot happening with interesting characters and well-defined conflicts. But it hardly gives you a nail-biting moment. With a capable cast and a production design that looks sleek, Suzhal remains moderately engaging at best.

The dramatic moments don't work as much they should have for us to care for the characters . It makes an important point against prejudice towards the end but it comes across as convenient. The series has a sense of mystery right through and is filled with twists but it never really keeps you at the edge of your seats.

2. Virata Parvam comes across as an honest film with a commendable central performance from Sai Pallavi. It is the kind of film that you wish you liked more than you actually do. It aspires to be poetic and this does translate well on screen at places but the drama doesn't keep you engaged throughout. Sai Pallavi makes her part work but the other characters and her equations with them are a mixed bag.

3. Night Drive works as a simple thriller that remains moderately engaging for the most part but the climax that turns over the top sticks out like a sore thumb and pulls down what is a watchable time pass flick.

4. Major is a biographical action drama that delivers what it aspires to. The performances are neat. The action is good and the emotions work. The best part is that it never really turns melodramatic. Veterans Revathi and Prakashraj put up an effective showcase of restrained emotional performances for a mainstream film.

This Telugu movie is streaming on Netflix.

5. Vikram is a whistleworthy actioner with enough highs right through. The world building is superb and the film is both grim and entertaining. Great to see Kamal being relatively laidback and having fun. Fahadh is terrific. While the idea of introducing Rolex in the climax helps to end the movie on a high, the mention of his character early on dilutes the fear we have on Sandhanam.

We already know that he is just taking orders from above. All said, Vikram works as a focused action film that stays true its genre and this is something we rarely see in mainstream Indian cinema. And yes, Anirudh's score plays a huge part in keeping you hooked to the screen.
