Cinematographer R. Madhie Interview : Bhaagamathie is Anushka's career best, Prabhas is one of the Kings of Telugu cinema

Anushka Shetty's first venture post Baahubali is due to hit theatre screens on January 26, 2018 and besides from the promising teasers and trailers, cinematographer of the film, R. Madhie gives us the scoop behind what went behind the scenes. "It is my first thriller film", begins the Tiruvarur-born Madhi who landed Bhaagamathie through UV Creations, the producers of the Tamil - Telugu bilingual. He goes on to add, "In a thriller film, most of the conveying is done through the lens. The intention was to give the audience a real life experience and so most of my shots are in real doc and low light."

Bhaagamathie is the cinematographer's second with Studio Green and Anushka Shetty after Naan Mahan Alla and Mirchi respectively. Talking about Anushka's growth from Mirchi till now, Madhie quips, "The Telugu fans refer to her as the Lady Superstar. I recall when Arundhathi was released, fans used to call her Jejamma then post Baahubali it was Deva Sena. People have already started calling her Bhaagamathie; I hope it (the fan-love) works for the film too. Anushka enjoys a unique fan-following and I am amazed with the way she is able to retain it with every film. Needless to say, she is an excellent performer. Bhaagamathie is by far the best film of her career."

Madhie is also working with Baahubali's other star Prabhas in his upcoming film Saaho. When questioned about all eyes being on the project, he says, "I understand the anticipation. Post Baahubali, Prabhas' market value has grown multiple folds. He is one of the "Kings" of Telugu cinema and we had to do justice to his stature. Saaho is budgeted at Rs. 200 crore and we have finished 50 percent of the shooting. We will be shooting the whole of this year so that the film can release by January, 2019."

Your name was credited as one of the producers on the Tamil film Jeeva. Any plans of producing? "No, I am comfortable doing my job as a cinematographer", he adds promptly. He may don the hat of a director though as he reveals, "I am working on a script. If everything falls in place, I may end up directing it" R. Madhie still sticks to selection criteria of script, director and actors (in that order) and 1 quality film a year. "It has come down though", he laughs."The Ghazi attack was shot 2 years back but it released in February last year and I had worked on Bhaagamathie 8 months ago and it is releasing now. I do not believe in doing back to back movies for the sake of it. It's true there is nothing in it for me if a movie becomes a hit or a flop but the calls (work related) start getting lesser once your films start showing instability. Success is important even for a technician."

"My next film in Tamil is with director Ahmed. He is working on the script, we will have an announcement soon", he concludes. Madhie's venture will be his third time collaboration with director Ahmed after the Jiiva-Trisha starrer Endrendum Punnagai and the critically acclaimed Udhayanidhi-Hansika starrer Manithan.
