Vikram and Jiiva's David Preview

Vikram’s David is gearing up for release tomorrow (February 1) along with Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kadal’. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Jiiva plays the second lead in the film. Vikram is looking for a solid hit for a long time now. Jiiva needs to get back to winning ways as his recent releases received mixed feedback. The cast also includes Isha Sharvani, Tabu, Lara Dutta and Nassar. It is a bilingual film that is also simultaneously releasing in Hindi.

The Tamil version revolves around two persons who share the same name, set in different time periods. Vikram plays a fisherman in the movie while Jiiva plays a guitarist. The Hindi version revolves around three different persons, with Neil Nitin Mukesh playing the third lead. It would be interesting to see how the screenplay connects the different plots, set in different era.

Strengths

  • Vikram and Jiiva are coming together for the first time. It is special since multi-starrers withe leading heroes are not common in Tamil Industry.
  • Director Bejoy Nambiar made an impressive debut with his Bollywood film ‘Shaitan’. He is expected to deliver yet another engaging film with ‘David’.
  • Interestingly, as many as six music directors including Anirudh have scored music for the film. The songs have become huge hits already, especially the ‘Kanave Kanave' song, scored by Anirudh. The trailers and song promos have aroused keen interest among the audience.
  • Cinematography is by three different cinematographers. Technically, the movie is looking slick.

Weakness and Threats

  • David has strong dubbed movie flavour in many of the scenes shown in trailer. Lack of nativity could also prove to be a dampener.
  • As a sign of support for Kamal Haasan in Vishwaroopam issue, some fans have decided not to watch any movie until Vishwaroopam releases. If this movement finds support and becomes more widespread, both David and Kadal will get a lukewarm response.

Final Words

‘David’ might face tough competition from Mani Ratnam’s Kadal at the box-office. But, the movie can have a good run at the box office, provided if the content is engaging and it manages to garner positive reports post release.
