Oru Naal Koothu is a drama based on relationships & marriages. In a way the stories of both Oru Naal Koothu & Iraivi sound similar to me. In both the films the directors wanted to convey how the decisions of men changes the lives of woMen. The only difference is, Iraivi, stresses more on rash decisions of Husband(s) than Men. In Oru Naal Koothu it was with the decisions of father(s), lover, friend & would be.

Though both try to convey the same thing in different platforms, i found Oru Naal Koothu more convincing.

Here are my takes on why Oru Naal Koothu is more convincing for me,

1. "Focus" : Firstly, Oru Naal Koothu travels more on establishing the characters & scenarios of every characters that lead the story without "unwanted subplots" .

2. "More of Practical/Realistic": Nelson keeps this drama quite realistic, most of their conversation looks real and casual, there is no single sign that director shows like hey i wanted to make this cult classic padam so is this dialogues. Subtle & Real.

For example, there was this conversation between Dinesh and Nivetha, where Nivetha urges for marriage & Dinesh was not ready blaming his situation & want to settle story, then

Dinesh questions the heroine "En mela unaku nambikai Ilaiya?"

She responded with " Un situation mela enaku nambikai ilai",

In the episode of Mia Geroge, for years Mia's father is not ready to accept or approve any groom and one day an aged groom knock their door for alliance and a heart-broken sister ask Mia !! Mappilaya paathiya ?

Mia: Paakala aana pudichuruku

How subtle can dialogues describe these situations of those womens and still stays real, casual and not over dramatic.

3. Fair share for woMen : Nelson had also pinpointed that not just men, even women have fair shares of bad/quick decisions as an outcome of anger, egos, etc., 1. Mia's escape 2. When Nivetha phoned her father after furious conversation 3. when Rythvika turned down her would be through phone. (Ps: I do not say that they should not have done that, i just loved the way director showed how quick the decisions are made and even women has a fair share on it)

4. True Iraivis: Women are known for Recovering / Realizing facts quick, they stand by their decision no matter what, ONK has deliberately showed it . Rythvika even after two disappointments on her relationships, she quickly recovers . While Nivetha justifies her decision that how Dinesh is not a backup plan to her father.

5. "Not a Happy Ending" is not a matter: There are two perspective on how people see a move's climax when there is no happy ending. 1. A Hard Hitting 2. Awardu padam eduka try panranga pa?.

They call it a "Hard hitting" when the facts are so real

They blame it as "Enna awardu padama?" when the people are so attached with characters and they want a happy ending, as well there is a possibility of happy ending, yet they force to opt for "not a happy ending" climax which is un-convincing. For me Oru Naal Koothu falls in the line between the both, at least i did not start up a discussion like oruvela climax "Ipdi Irundhurukalame".

With all due respect to Karthik Subbaraj, i found this is a better "Iraivi" for a comman man, i dont call Iraivi as a bad film, for me, its a missed opportunity filmed with more of artistic way.

Ps: Oru Naal Koothu is not a cult classic film or something i try to say. Its just a comparison of two movies i watched recently, where both travels on same line and how this is better convincing on comparison to other.
