MovieCrow Box Office Report - May 16 to 18

Not even a single Tamil film released on May 16. The production houses played it safe so they do not get swept aside by Modi wave and Kochadaiiyaan's release, expected on May 23. Hollywood film Godzilla released last weekend and it made up for the lack of new Tamil release for the movie buffs. Check out the box office ranking of Tamil movies in Chennai during last weekend (May 16-18).

1. Yaamirukka Bayamey

Yaamirukka Bayamey shows were increased, bigger screens were allotted and the occupancy levels also rose for the movie. Word of mouth was the key and the movie picked up making more collections in the second weekend than the first weekend. Trade pundits have already termed the movie as a 'Hit'. 

2. Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham

Although Santhanam's Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham had retained most of the screens, the occupancy levels dropped steeply due to mixed reviews. The common talk has been that Santhanam is good in comical scenes, but he needs to improve a lot when he emotes intensely. Also, the choice of scripts matters a lot.

3. Vaayai Moodi Pesavum 

Balaji Mohan's Vaayai Moodi Pesavum has held on to the multiplex screens well and continues to get good crowd over the weekend. The movie was promptly removed from most of the single screens.

Other Movies

Maan Karate and Tenaliraman are still screened at sizable number of screens in the city, thanks to the star power, while Ennamo Nadakuthu has lost out on screens considerably.  

Upcoming week's release(s)

Rajinikanth's Kochadaiyaan, which was supposed to release on May 9, was postponed in the last minute to May 23. The theatres are still returning the credit back to all the people who made the reservations anticipating May 9 release. The advance bookings have already started in few multiplexes. But, fans are waiting until a day or two before release date to avoid inconvenience.
