Jana Nayagan row: EC to decide on Vijay film amid Model Code of Conduct, says TN CEO

Amid the ongoing censor developments surrounding Jana Nayagan, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik has clarified that the Election Commission of India (ECI) will examine the matter before taking a decision on the film.

The clarification comes after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recommended that the ECI assess the Vijay-starrer due to its political content, with the Model Code of Conduct currently in force ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.

Addressing the media, Archana Patnaik stated that the commission will review the issue and arrive at an appropriate decision, noting that such a situation—where a film featuring an actor who is also an active political leader requires clearance during the election period—is unprecedented.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan has been facing delays since its initial release plan for January 9. The film was earlier sent for re-evaluation following objections raised by a member of the censor board over religious sensitivities and the use of armed forces logos.

The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Priyamani, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
