Parasakthi Producers Tell Madras HC: Anti-Hindi Agitations Can't Be Copyrighted

The producers of Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, told the Madras High Court that no individual can claim copyright or exclusive ownership over historical events like the anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu.

Responding to a plagiarism plea, the makers stated that the film merely uses history as a backdrop, while its characters, narrative, and dramatic elements are entirely fictional and original.

The case was filed by scriptwriter Varun Rajendran, who sought to halt the film’s OTT release, claiming his 2010 registered script Chemmozhi was used without credit.

Opposing the plea, the producers asserted that director Sudha Kongara independently developed the script, drawing inspiration from well-documented historical movements — which are not protected under copyright law.

After hearing both sides, the court adjourned the matter without granting interim relief. The injunction plea will be taken up again on February 9, 2026, even as Parasakthi is scheduled for its OTT release on February 7.
