During the promotions of Coolie, Bollywood star actor Aamir Khan had confirmed that he is doing a full fledged Hindi film with Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj, besides appearing in a cameo role in Lokesh Kanagaraj directed Coolie. This update got a lot of interest, as a film with Aamir Khan would mark Lokesh's Bollywood debut, just as the Coolie cameo marked Aamir Khan's Tamil debut.
Post the release of Coolie, reports were rife that Aamir Khan's much anticipated collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj has been dropped, even though Aamir Khan had stated that his movie with the Kollywood director would take shape only after Lokesh completed his commitments with Kaithi 2 starring Karthi.
However with Lokesh Kanagaraj’s salary having crossed Rs. 50 Cr+ due to Coolie, SR Prabhu's Dream Warrior Pictures was facing issues bringing the director on board for Kaithi 2, the sequel to Karthi's 2018 action thriller Kaithi. Latest we hear, Kaithi 2 faces a threat of being shelved, despite being the cornerstone film of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU).
With both Kaithi 2, and the big budget superhero film with Aamir Khan not happening as of now, all eyes were on Lokesh Kanagaraj's buzzed project that would bring together Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan after decades. However last week, Rajinikanth clarified that the director for his film with Kamal Haasan, which will jointly be produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International, and Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies, has not been finalized yet.
"I'm doing a movie next jointly for Raaj Kamal (Films) and Red Giant (Movies) both. The director has not been fixed yet. Kamal (Haasan) and I both have desire to act with each other. But we need to get an apt story and character for that. If we get it, we will act.
We (Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth) do have plans (of doing a movie together). But we don't have a director, story, or characters set yet.", Rajinikanth to the media on September 17, 2025
Interestingly, the superhero story Lokesh Kanagaraj was supposed to do with Aamir Khan, was previously narrated to Rajinikanth but the Tamil star was not in a space at that time, to take on such a huge project. Prior to Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth, the superhero film was also linked to actor Suriya as a story titled Irumbukai Maayavi.
