The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, also known as the NDPS Act prohibits any person in India from narcotic and/or psychotropic substance abuse. A police complaint against actor Vijay has been filed in Chennai in reference to this NDPS Act, alleging that the actor is promoting tobacco use via the song Naa Ready from his upcoming movie Leo.
Naa Ready composed by Anirudh is a song themed around smoking and drinking. Some lines of the song penned by Vishnu Edavan, and rapper Asal Kolar go, "Hey for me drinking, a bottle isn't enough (s0) bring a vessel to do cheers", "In the smoke of tobacco, getting ready to harvest", "I'll offer you too to family deity along with Goat (Mutton), Arrack (distilled alcoholic drink), Beedi (thin cigar), Tobacco Cigar", "Power Kick when lit smoke is let out (smoking reference)", "Power kick when Tobacco Smokes" (word play on tobacco and burning), "If Milli(litre of alcohol) goes inside, Ghilli comes out".
Vijay who has also sung Naa Ready is seen holding a cigarette with his mouth for most part of the song that was unveiled. This has resuled in a a Chennai-based social activist named Selvam file an online complaint with Shankar Jiwal, Chennai commissioner of police on June 25, 2023.
In his complaint Selvam alleges the viral Naa Ready song promotes rowdyism, drug addiction, and alcohol consumption. The activist claims that the widespread reach of the number influences youngsters to use drugs, and that he is ready to go to court to put a full stop to it. It is worth mentioning here that Leo is part of writer, director Lokesh Kanagaraj's action cinematic universe known as the LCU, the central theme of which is busting the drug mafia. The movie releases in theaters on October 19, 2023.
