Viduthalai Part 1 Trailer - First Impression Report

PUBLISHED DATE : 10/Mar/2023

Director Vetrimaaran is back with his next film titled Viduthalai Part 1 and the film starring Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Menon in pivotal roles had a trailer release recently. The video trended at No: 1 on YouTube for the first 24 hours and even amassed 1 Cr (10 Million) views within the first day. Currently at 14 million views and counting, Viduthalai Part 1 continues to be a talking point. A first impression report of the trailer:

Jeyamohan + Vetrimaaran

It is no secret that Viduthalai Part 1 is adapted from well-known writer - B. Jeyamohan's short story Thunaivan. The movie was expected to be a heavy subject noir drama and the trailer jolts you with nothing less. One of director Vetrimaaran's national awards is for his film on police brutality - Visaranai (2016). The filmmaker has once again tackled this in Viduthalai, while basing Vijay Sethupathi's character on the real life Vaathiyaar - who was a member of the Tamil Desiyam Group in the 1980s.

Soori, Vijay Sethupathi & Gautham Menon

Viduthalai is actor Soori's first movie as a lead and from what we see in the trailer, he sells his serious avatar of Kumaresan - a bottom-of-the-chain police constable, effortlessly. Vijay Sethupathi who plays  Perumal Vaathiyaar - leader of a separatist group "People's Army" and Gautham Menon who plays a cop, are accompanied with searing dialogues and intense stares, respectively.

Bhavani Sre

The close to 3 minute trailer also leaves room for Bhavani Sre to make an impression. Though the actress who hails from a famous family (AR Rahman - maternal uncle, GV Prakash - brother, Saindhavi - sister-in-law, A.R. Reihana - mother) is 2-films and some web-series old, she is relatively new but comes across as a pro in the movie.

Ilaiyaraaja and Other Technicals

The grim vibe of the trailer is aptly aided by Ilaiyaraaja's music. R. Velraj's cinematography and other technical are top-notch as well.  Peter Hein / Stun Siva's action choreography may become a talking point since they've primarily dealt with an actor who has never had to do it before. VFX seems to be the only downer at this point, and hopefully that is fixed before the film's release.

Bottomline

Overall, Viduthalai Part 1 trailer arrests your attention, jolts and then lingers long after the video has ended. Hopefully this will be the next big thing from Vetrimaaran who hasn't had a full length feature release since Asuran in 2019.
