Kaappaan, K.V. Anand directed upcoming espionage thriller is scheduled for a release on September 20, 2019 and at this time, it has been revealed that the film has completed its censor formalities. The movie which stars Suriya, Mohanalal, Arya and Sayyesha in  the lead has been certified an U/A by the CBFC. 

Kaappaan by K.V. Anand's admission, is a result of the incidents and anecdotes the director collected as a part of research about the Special Protection Group (SPG) of the NSG. “These are people who provide proximate security to the PM and get paid to take a bullet..But what if there was a spy among them and what if he plots to assassinate the PM? This became the basis of the movie..”, the director was quoted in a print interview.

Kaappaan is produced by Lyca Productions and has Harris Jayaraj for music. The film has been co-written by Pattukottai Prabhakaran and is touted to be made at a budget of Rs. 75 Cr.
