Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal Review - Shoddy is the Word

BharathVijayakumar

As the starting credits roll with quite a few amateurish capture of images/scenes depicting friendship, you fear the meaning of the title. Is the director actually referring to us the audience?

Plot:

The hero in his efforts to commit suicide plays havoc in the lives of his friends.

Jai's career is quite an enigma. Audience seem to enjoy his demeanour. He is good at comedy and can surely carry an action film on his shoulders. His choice of scripts too isn't really bad. Be it Pugazh, Tamilselvanum Thaniyaar Anjalum or even Valiyavan. All of these films have an interesting idea. Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal follows suit. It is the execution that has let him down consistently. Also with him the line between subtle acting and disinterest is very thin. Here it seems to lean towards the latter quite often. Karunakaran , Kaali Venkat and Naveen who play his friends in the film are not able to bring in the laughter consistently. The camaraderie amongst them itself is quite inconsistent. It is there in a scene and then everything seems lost.

The film looks extremely shoddy. Is it ineptness or a complete disregard for the medium? This is sad given the fact that this film could have really worked as an 'Adult Comedy'. Some of the jokes do work in-spite of many a shortcoming. The last leg of the film turns into a black comedy involving a murder, gangsters and what not? These scenes involving Mottai Rajendran as 'Black Rock' could have worked wonders with some care. But the execution falls way below the least threshold. We are not even sure on what tone the director wants the film to travel. In a lighthearted comedy we are shown a gory accident and a surgery in detail!!! Pranitha's characterisation is the biggest joke of the film. We are not even sure what her character arc is.  Her actions in the film are incomprehensible and her clueless face only adds to our woes.

Bottomline:

What could have been a rollicking adult comedy ends up as a merely tolerable fare, thanks to the shoddy execution. It turns out to be one of those films where there are enough jokes but not enough laughter.
