Ajith's Billa 2 disappoints in North America Box Office

The North America estimated box office numbers for Billa 2 has disappointed the trade pundits. It is a surprise why some of the media sites are making hyperbolic statements that "Ajith is The new overseas King of Opening" without the right perspective. 

In the US and Canada, Billa 2 made $63,954 on Friday, $40,250 on Saturday and roughly estimated total of $44,000 for both Sunday and Thursday premiere shows. Usually, Saturday collections should be equal or higher than the Friday collection. Billa 2 showed a 30% drop from Friday to Saturday attributing to poor word of mouth. Note: Rest of the 25 screens were single show releases in small cities. Those screens were omitted also for other movies in this list to keep the comparison fair and square.

Did Billa 2 break any overseas BO records?

All the box office records remain intact. We do not see any reason to believe Billa 2 has made Ajith as the new Box Office King as many popular magazines claim. When it comes to opening in the US, Enthiran is all alone in a totally separate orbit with collection of more than $2.1 Million which is almost 14 times more revenue than Billa 2. Billa 2 is still far behind Enthiran, Dasavatharam, Sivaji Mankatha and 7aum Arivu. The logical comparison point for Billa 2 should be alongside Saguni, Deivathirumagal or 3 with final BO collection tally of roughly $150,000 to $200,000. 

North America collections for recent Telugu Movies

When comparing the US opening box office with other regional movies(i.e., Telugu), Billa 2 is not in the same league as recent movies of Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu or SS Rajamouli. (e.g., Opening weekend collections for recent Telugu movies are Eega ($660,000), Gabbar Singh ($640,000), Dookudu ($718,450). All these recent Telugu releases in the US collected at least 5 times more than our average Tamil movies. 

In Summary. Billa 2's collection in the US is nothing spectacular in comparison with other Tamil or Telugu movies released recently in the US. It is pure blasphemy for media and posters to compare Billa 2 with Enthiran's BO collections.
