Vettaiyan: Anirudh talks cameo, Rajinikanth, Super Subu, Malaysia Vasudevan & more!

Vettaiyan starring Rajinikanth in the lead is an upcoming Tamil movie that is slated to release in theaters on October 10, 2024. The Dusshera release also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rana Daggubati among others, and is directed by TJ Gnanavel. The film's first single composed by Anirudh is all the rage right now, and Vettaiyan producers Lyca Productions on Saturday unveiled an exclusive BTS video of this viral Manasilaayo song.

Anirudh Ravichander talks of his Mansailaayo cameo, Rajinikanth's idea of bringing back Malaysia Vasudevan's voice through AI, Hukum lyricist and self proclaimed Superstar fan Super Subu returning for Manasilaayo, and more in this video. Excerpts of what Anirudh revealed:

"After I got the song ready, director (TJ Gnanavel) asked me if I could come for a few seconds (in it). I told 'sure I will come'. Since Manasilaayo is already a popular term, the idea was to do a song with it. In the (Vettaiyan) story, the situation was an event taking place in the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Because of the geography, the plan was to do a song with it (Manasilaayo in Malayalam term which translates to 'understood?').

The biggest credit of this song obviously goes to Super Subu and Vishnu Edavan (lyricists of Manasilaayo). Super Subu was the one who first wrote it..I do not know Malayalam, he doesn't either...But it was good to listen. Usually a Thalaivar opening song has pieces of advice here and there..My idea was to keep it lighthearted. Both their (lyricists') first drafts got okayed. So thank you to Subu and Vishnu.

We needed a raw voice who could sing the Tamil-Malayalam tone. So Deepthi Suresh's voice is also a big plus of Manasilaayo..The song was shot using a rough track with my voice. But in the second half, he (Rajinikanth) had to lip sync. While shooting I was in Thalaivar's caravan. He (Rajinikanth) was the one who suggested about trying Malaysia Vasudevan. It is from there I got the spark (for bringing back the legendary singer's voice through AI).

Yugendran, his (Malaysia Vasudevan's) son is the one who actually sang the (AI) portions. Yugendran's voice is what has been converted to Malaysia Vasudevan's (through AI). There were two options in AI, Malaysia Vasudevan's voice from Singam Onnu Purapattadhae in 1997 were HD recordings, till then it was the 70s, 80s sound.

Krishna Chetan is the person who helped me with the AI for both options. The voice tenor of Malaysia Vasudevan from Singam Onnu Purapattadhe was clearer. But overall I felt that his voice from the 80s Podhuvaga Emanasu Thangam gave a more super retro mood. So that was the AI voice we retained...I'm a big fan of the Thalaivar-Malaysia Vasudevan Sir combo. So to be able to recreate it was a very special moment.

Everyone knows that Super Subu is a hectic Rajinikanth fan...So after the lyrics, he gave me a rap and asked if that could be set somewhere (in the song). Since the sound was good, we set it in the song after he gave us the lyrics..That rap portion was first sung by Subu..But when I saw the shooting, Thalaivar was doing the rap portion energetically, so we had to change the rap portion to AI (in Malaysia Vasudevan's voice).

I had quite a jolly time shooting (the cameo portion in Manasilaayo). I'm very happy with the response the song's been getting."
