A Social Justice Tale with Star Power

In the world of instant gratification, police encounters may feel like the right thing. The movie beautifully highlights the importance of trust in law and order is necessary for long term justice in a thriving democracy. This movie is a. engaging civic lesson, despite being a bit preachy. What is the point in showing Dushara's gruesome violent murder at least 8 times in the movie through multiple flash cuts scenes. Why? It is totally unnecessary and serves no purpose. The movie deserves an "A" certification just for that one reason. Tamil cinema has no shortage of commercial directors. T.J. Gnanavel returning to his roots and staying true to his style would better serve the industry, allowing it to regain a thoughtful, sensible filmmaker.(more)

TJ Gnanavel's take on encounter killings is burdened by predictability and the weight of Rajinikanth's superstardom

Finally, as the credits of Vettaiyan roll, yours truly was left with the thought about the film being better served with a smaller star. A star who wouldnt overwhelm the film, and allow it to breathe. Because confining Rajinikanth to a box isnt easy as the world is still grappling with the dichotomy of being torn between wanting to see Rajinikanth in a new avatar, and wanting to see him exude style and charisma like old times. What do we really want? Well, the hunt for the answer is on.(more)

Rajini preaches Gnanavel's school of thought, in style

Director Gnanavel delivers yet another social drama but this time wrapped in commercial paper. He had an interesting story in the hand too, but the star-vehicle bug seems to have stopped him from exploring some interesting places in the narration. Overall, the movie is a predictable investigative thriller-social drama that packs several Rajini moments for fans to cherish.(more)

Rajinikanth's swag, Amitabh Bachchan's powerful act & Fahadh Faasil's charisma make this action-thriller a must-watch

Talking about the performances, its Rajinikanth show and no one can beat his swag, charm and onscreen charisma. Amitabh Bachchan delivers an intense act with his powerful and magnetic persona. Fahadh Faasil is a delight to watch as once again he wins the heart with his loveable performance. Ritika Singh & Manju Warrier have played their parts to the T. While Rana Daggubati is menacing as Natraj, I wish he would have more screen time.(more)

TJ Gnanavel's lackluster follow-up to Jai Bhim squanders Rajinikanth's star power

Director TJ Gnanavel has tried to combine numerous issues in Vettaiyan. While he tries to tackle the morality of police encounter killings on one hand, he delves into the coaching business in the country. He shows us that the coaching business, especially for exams like NEET, has a dark side where those who cant afford the high fees get trapped into bank loans and EMIs and eventually see ruin.(more)

Vettaiyan is a film that will leave you unfulfilled. Courtesy: Uninteresting screenplay. It also makes you think what if the film featured an actor who doesn't come with the superstardom that Thalaivar Rajinikanth possesses?(more)
