Valimai Songs - Music Review

Ramesh Kannan

Valimai is one of the most expected movies and the makers, as well as fans, ensured that the hype around the movie sustains for a very long time from 2019. Yuvan Shankar Raja scores music for the film and let's see whether the relatively short soundtrack matches up to the expectations around the movie.

Naanga Vera Maari:

Naanga Vera Maari plays to the gallery of the typical Hero celebration mass song. Yuvan ticks off everything from the thumping percussions to the high octane singing by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Anurag Kulkarni. Odisha Musical troupe Maa Dhakinakali Singha Baja who collaborated with Anirudh for Marana Mass performed in Naanga Vera Maari and the similarities are uncanny. The track may go well with the visuals but one can't disregard the fact that the tune falls flat despite much energy brought into arrangements and rendition.

Mother Song:

Yuvan shines in the highly serene melody in Mother song with ample support from Sid Sriram's singing. The tune is tailor-made for the singer and Yuvan spruces up the arrangements with the mellow KJ Vijay's flute as well as gentle rhythm.

Enna Kurai

The soundtrack best goes to another melody Enna Kurai and it is a delight to listen to Nandini Srikar's vocals for Yuvan after Aaha Kadhal in Moondru Per Moondru Kadhal. Yuvan kept the interludes as well as arrangements simple allowing singers Nandini and Sriram Parthasarathy to take center stage. KJ Vijay's flute solos peppered throughout the track complements the exquisite beauty of the melody.

Intense of Fire and Whistle Theme:

The techno-loaded intense of Fire may work well with the visuals but not as a standalone track and the corny lyrics don't help either. However, the swag in the Whistle theme works much better and one wishes that Yuvan could have done an extended version of the instrumental. The theme brings forth the mysterious aura and the chilling soundscape well within one and half minutes.

Verdict:

Yuvan's score for one of the highly expected movies is largely a mixed bag from the composer and the soundtrack is salvaged by a couple of neatly done melodies.

My Rating: 2.5/5

Pick of the Album: Whistle theme, Mother song.
