In the opening week of the New Year, lets have a look at the box office status of films in Chennai city. Surprisingly Akshay Kumar's 'Good Newwz' has grabbed the top spot at Chennai Box office this weekend pushing aside Tamil releases. 

Top 5 at Chennai Box Office (January 3 - 5)

1. GoodNewwz - Rs. 85 lakhs ( 10 days) 

2. Thambi - Rs. 3.68 cr (17 days)

4. Jumanji The Next Level

Karthi starrer Thambi has grossed Rs. 3.8 cr in 17 days and has overtaken the collections of Sivakarthikeyan's Hero which has collected Rs. 3.66 cr. Both the films released on December 20 and bagged mixed response. This weekend Karthi's film collected Rs. 20 lakhs while Hero managed to collect only around Rs. 9 lakhs.

As many as 8 small / lesser known Tamil films hit the screens on January 3 in Kollywood. None of these newly released films have made a mark at the Box Office while previously released films have comparatively shown better performance at the Box Office which is otherwise going through a dull phase. Superstar Rajinikanth's Darbar which is hitting the screens this Friday is expected to bring in footlfalls in large numbers and revive the Kollywood Box Office.
