The 10th century based story of Ponniyin Selvan, which is about the life of Raja Raja Chola before he became king is all set to be made into a two-part film by director Mani Ratnam. While Ponniyin Selvan plans to begin shooting from early 2020, latest news about the project is that it comes with 12 songs. 

This has been confirmed by lyricist Vairamuthu himself in a recent interview, who has also revealed that he has done a lot of research to represent lyrics suited to the 10th century as well as suit to the taste of the current generation; Mani Ratnam's regular A.R. Rahman is composing the music for this magnum opus.

The screenplay for Ponniyin Selvan has been co-written by actor Elango Kumaravel who has earlier adapted the book by Kalki Krishnamoorthy into a stage play and the film's confirmed star cast includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayaram and Parthiban among others.
