3 has received moderate to good response so far from the first day first show audience. The movie need to get at least a "worth watching once" or better word of mouth recommendation from first day audience to become a hit.

Overall the majority of the audience have preferred the first half to be better than the second.  Even though the movie's switch over from one genre to another appears to be consistent with the bipolar nature of the lead character. Some call the transition during the first as Hot and Cold and others call it Sweet and Sour. 

The second half has the director Aishwarya's mentor Selvaraghavan touch to it. Overall, Aishwarya is well appreciated for showing lots of maturity in direction which is surprising for a first time director. One interesting comment claimed "It is Shruti Haasan till interval. It is Dhanush post interval. But, it is Aishwarya all the way."

Dhanush has performed extremely well and proves again why he deserves the National Award. Dhanush's role as Ram is being compared to his characters in ‘Thulluvatho Ilamai’, ‘Kathal Kondein’ and 'Mayakkam Enna'. Shruti Haasan's role as teenager carries the first half and highlights her acting potential.

Regarding the much talked about Kolaveri, the song picturization has disappointed the fans and called the choreography and locations as very ordinary. It is difficult to match the huge expectations set by the Kolaveri song. In order to stay true to the song, the team had decided to picturize it exactly the way they had envisioned before the kolaveri went viral.

The man who walks home with unanimous appreciation from all quarters is Music Director Anirudh whose songs and BGM in the movie have made the kind of splash that AR Rahman made with his dream debut in Roja.
