Yash Raj Films produced 2018 Hindi movie Thugs of Hindostaan starring Aamir Khan in the lead was the first Indian film to release on 4DX format, alongside the MX4D format. 4DX, licensed by South Korean cinema chain CJ CGV worldwide is an immersive format of showcasing movies with intreactive factors like motion seats and such. Although around since 2009, this 4D format is yet to take off widely in India; Currently 4DX screens are functioning only in select metros, that too in very few numbers.

Mani Ratnam directed Ponniyin Selvan movie is gearing up for a sequel release titled PS-2, and it will be the first South Indian / Tamil film to release on the 4DX format. Ironically, there are no 4DX screens in Tamil Nadu and its capital city Chennai. Tamil movie viewers in other cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and other metropolitan areas can catch the movie in 4DX on April 28, 2023.

Starring Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi among others, PS-2 is the part 2 of the 9th century Cholas era story originally written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The movie has AR Rahman for music and is produced by Lyca Productions, Madras Talkies.
