Tamil film actors who transitioned from TV to the Movies!

 

In the entertainment business, it is a pretty common trend for actors to make their start in television and then move into the movies. The Tamil film industry too has seen a lot of such transition, both from actors who made a name for themselves on the small screen and those whose TV careers gained spotlight after they became recognizable film actors.

Below is a list of some such Kollywood names and details about their respective days of glory on the TV.


1. Vijay Sethupathi -
While appearing in uncredited roles in movies, Vijay Sethupathi also featured in a TV series named Penn which aired on Sun TV between February and November, 2006. Vijay Sethupathi was also a part of Karthik Subbaraj's team when the latter competed in Kalaignar TV’s reality show for aspiring directors, Naalaya Iyakunar. 

2. Attakathi Dinesh - Incidentally actor Dinesh too started his career from Sun TV's Penn, where he played actress Seetha's son.

3. Sivakarthikeyan 
One of the most famous examples of TV to movie transition is that of actor Sivakarthikeyans who started off as a participant of a reality show on Vijay TV, rising to the ranks of anchoring shows on the same channel to now a film star in his own right.

4. Sai Pallavi 
One of Vijay TV's other famous discoveries is actress Sai Pallavi who was once a participant is their dance reality show Ugalil Yaar Adutha Prabhu Deva. 


5. Aishwarya Rajesh 
Another actress who went from anchoring on Sun TV (Asatha Povadhu Yaaru) to a dance show participant on Kalaingnar TV, before entering films. 

6. Nayanthara 
The lady superstar was anchoring on the Malayalam channel Kairali before her Tamil debut with Ayya. 


7. Santhanam 

It is a well-known fact that actor Santhanam was famous for his timely comedy in Vijay TV's Lollu Sabha. However not many know that had his humble beginnings in a local tele-caller show in Pondicherry. 


8. Vimal - Little known fact about actor Vimal is that he started his career from Sun TV's most famous serial Chitthi. 

9. Samuthirakani 
Actor-director Samuthirkanai had done a ton of TV serials in an acting capacity before he established himself in Kollywood. Samuthirakani was first seen in K. Balachander's Ramani Vs Ramani, then in Sun TV's Arasi and Jaya TV's Anni.

10. Soori

Comedian Soori had acted in Thirumathi Selvam before his famous movie debut as 'Parotta Soori'.

11. Vivek 
Actor Vivek has appeared in a TV show titled Top Takkar in the 1980s. This was before he started making film apperances.

12. Madhavan 
Madhavan started through Hindi TV with series such as Sea Hawks (drama) and Ghar Jamai (comedy).

13. Prakash Raj 
Before entering Tamil filmdom, this actor had made Kannada film and TV serial appearances. His career started with Doordarshan serials such as Bisilu Kudure and Guddada Bhootha.  


14. Vani Bhojan 
More recent TV to movie transition came through actress Vani Bhojan who has been a part of several lead roles on shows in channels like Sun TV, Jaya TV and Zee Tamil. 


15. Rio

Another actor who has transitioned from small to big screen in recent times, Rio was a successful anchor on TV before he ventured into acting.
