Over the years, actor Simbu (who also goes by STR) has had his share of committing in films which either got delayed by years (Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM), Idhu Namma Aalu (INA), etc) or never completely materialized (list here).
His 'professionalism' towards a project has often come under the scanner, be it with Pandiraj's sarcastic comment that his wife was pregnant while beginning INA but by the time it released his daughter had begun schooling or Gautham Menon's open letter requesting STR to complete AYM's shooting. [That Gautham himself has an image of delaying projects is a different subject].
These kind of complaints reached its pinnacle when a film named Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangathavan (AAA) drew strong criticism even from fans of STR and the film's producer attributed its failure to Simbu not turning up for shoots and being non-cooperative at locations.
But as fate would have it, the actor seemed to be taking stock of things with releases like Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Vandha Rajavathan Varuven, Kaatrin Mozhi (cameo) and 90ml (another cameo). Simbu even apologized to AAA producer Michael Rayappan at the audio launch of Sakka Podu Podu Raja, for which he had composed music.
However this 'revival-streak' did not last long, for Maanaadu, a political thriller STR was supposed to be a part of, never took off for a year and half since its announcement. While 'Simbu's side' claims that the producer Suresh Kamatchi wasted the dates given to him by delaying in putting together a team, the producer on his part has said that it was Simbu who called him in the first place for making a project like Maanadu and while it was being developed, it was Simbu's request that he first complete a film with Studio Green and appear in a cameo in Maha.
Clarifying that it was also Simbu who wanted to opt out of the project, Suresh Kamatchi in an interview has said,
"The only problem with Simbu is that he cannot be accessed directly..He has a gate of around 10 people around him..He told me that the media had written false reports about him and I hadn't reacted to it..It is clear that he is in a stressful state of mind and it is difficult to level with him..Otherwise he is a nice man..
If he had done Maanaadu it would given life to both me and Simbu but when he himself wanted me to announce that he has dropped out of the film, I didn't see fit to coerce any further..He is already a big actor but I would want him correct himself a little and give many more hits for his fans.."
