Spider Man Far From Home review

Striking a few right chords, this Spider web is light hearted fun & grand visuals but nothing ecstatic

Does a kid bestowed with an enormously demanding responsibility choose love or does duty tie him down? What happens when he treads upon unforeseen danger in doing so and how the 16 year old handles it is the simple line of Spider-Man Far From Home directed by Jon Watts. The entire play of this Marvel film revolves around this line and it is safe to say the movie also tries to serve as a tribute to the most loved character Ironman. Does this Spider Man web you to your seats?

Peter Parker played by Tom Holland has to travel to Europe with his high school group for a leisure trip and simultaneously he receives multiple calls from Nick Fury and team regarding a very important mission. The kid who does not realise his responsibility goes on to Rome and realises this is where the danger lies for him. What is stated as a coincidence of sorts by Nick Fury looks more like film liberty taken for granted by the makers. However, a lot of humour as you would expect from a Marvel film tries to fill up for this.

Zendaya as MJ is Peter’s love interest and Peter has to somehow ask her out before the end of this trip and these moments have worked well for this flick. Though usual, the lack of time for romance due to tight circumstances for Spider Man, the curiosity that audiences get when they expect MJ to know who Spider Man actually is and the appreciable humour carried out by Peter’s best friend Ned are all major positives that can be termed as the cards played right by the team. However, what could have been better gets a place too and that is where one might think the film is not very unique.

There is a very impressively shot water based fight sequence that happens in Rome and this requires a special mention for the VFX work. Another mention would be the emotions that play out in the carnival fight between the elemental fire monster and Peter Parker alongside Beck, a new superhero that we are introduced to as a just and genuine character new to the Marvel Universe. But that is where the doubt arises as well and just before we think this could be something very different, the big twist that most audiences might have guessed comes by. Though not too smartly written, the film picks up pace post this major twist that serves as a typically placed interval block shot inside a resto-bar.

As for the technicalities, Spider Man is a sound film with good graphic work and some really good cinematography. The background score too seems apt in most places and supports the Marvel elements that we see in sequences that most audiences would enjoy. But where lies trouble is the sub-plot and how it does not necessarily drive the content forward. Engagement though not an issue in this aspect, some of the Marvel fans would have expected more fizz with respect to this sub-plot linkage with the core of the film.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio or Quentin Beck is impressive against the deadly elementals and also in the latter half when things get complicated. Be it the scene where he gets hold of the Edith or the mysteriously deceiving sequences in the latter half, his performance sure is a big positive for the film and he pulls off his character quite well. A little more depth to the flashback of the villain would have made things even more interesting and this again accounts to the plot and pre-production work with respect to a call for more extensive writing. Kudos to the choreography of the climax action block that will attract fans of such mass destruction scenes that involve superior visual effects.

On the whole, Spider-Man Far From Home is definitely a very watchable film for its basic engagement factor and for the fact that there are a lot of references and tribute based scenes to the favourite Ironman. The nature of the script is surely that of good potential but a more intriguing ride would have made it a better watch for one and all. Nevertheless, this Spider-Man film is not too far from being that and emerges as an enjoyable ride with some light moments and ecstatic action based visuals.

Bottomline: A fairly engaging film for the majority audiences with its Marvel elements intact but could have had more intensity and finesse for fans of the Universe!
