Movies This Week: Seethakaathi, Adanga Maru & Kanaa emerge on top!

Among the slew of releases for Christmas weekend, Tamil films seems to have done really well both in terms of content and appealing to the audience. A detailed look into the options this week:

  • Maari 2 (Tamil): Dhanush's sequel to one of his more popular films, Maari 2 comes with all ingredients aimed at box-office success. However, the story of the naughty don Maari turning nice and facing a man hell bent on taking his life has opened to mixed responses. (Review here)

  • Seethakaathi (Tamil): One of the first films to open the show, Seethakaathi follows the story of a veteran theater artiste who decides to start acting in films. What the film world has in store for someone who has shied away from movie business all his life is told in a novel way. Despite the unanimously agreed upon tedious narration, the film stands tall with the highest rating aggregate this week.  (Review here)

  • Kanaa (Tamil): Following Seethakaathi in movie ratings is Arunraja Kamaraj directed Kanaa which talks about both women empowerment and importance of farming. This feel-good film of an aspiring lady cricketer seems to be engaging audience of all range and would make for an entertaining watch this weekend.  (Review here)

  • Adanga Maru (Tamil): A revenge thriller about an enraged police officer, Adanga Maru though predictable has been quite liked all around. The film's engaging screenplay would be worth a while to watch, making it to the list of our recommended movies this week.  (Review here)

  • Silukkuvarpatti Singam (Tamil): A low ranking constable inadvertently locks up a highly wanted criminal, only to earn his wrath and what follows is presented in a funny manner in Silukkuvarpatti Singam. The response to this Vishnu Vishal starrer has been mixed.

  • Zero (Hindi):A love triangle among a vertically challenged man, a scientist with cerebral palsy and a heart-broken film-star is what zero is all about. But the movie somehow travels to space as well and this love-story-space crossover is what has evoked contrasting views about the film. (Review Here)

  • Antariksham 9000 Kmph (Telugu): The film is about an Astronaut who has gone incognito being brought back to fix a satellite, which now poses a danger to the communication world. Even with being one of the few ambitious 'space films', Antariksham with its unimpressive VFX and all-over-the-place screenplay, has done not much to impress the viewers.

  • Padi Padi Leche Manasu (Telugu): Sai's Pallavi may have had an impressive outing in Tamil this weekend, but the same cannot be said about her Telugu one. Too many elements such as love conflict, earthquake and retrogade amnesia are presented in a not very engaging manner.

Others: Besides these films, the very ambitious Kannada movie KGF was released this week in all major national languages, A period drama about the journey of a man named Rocky from a killer to a messiah and his greed for fame and money is what the film chronicles. However, the grand scale of the film and the noise surrounding it seems to have not translated enough on screen.
