An outlandish drama about the immortality of art
In a nutshell, Seethakathi is about the purity of art in its truest form. The film never takes the art vs business route nor does it play the blame game. Even the producer who looks to monetise 'Ayya' is not painted evil. I only wished Balaji kept the 'filmmaking' scenes a little shorter. You laugh the first few times but the cycle keeps repeating. But this definitely is intentional from Balaji and he probably has a strong reason for the same. The court scene towards the climax felt a little contrived.(more)

Vijay Sethupathi's quirky meta film celebrates art in the most entertaining way
Seethakathi is not only powered by a quirky core idea, but also by its quirkiest choice of actors and it's one of the reasons why the film works, despite the pacing issues. Also, Govind Vasantha's music is a major highlight of the film as it beautifully heightens the emotions in the initial portion featuring Sethupathi. If only Seethakathi can be watched with an open mind and not get judged by its first 40 minutes, it's sure to go down as one of the best films of the year.(more)

The Artiste As A Franchise
Seethakaathi is a film where even the metaphor is flesh and blood, which is why the casting of Vijay Sethupathi is its most honest endeavor. The reflexive nature of this film begins with the casting for Ayya Adimoolam. This is a film that takes pot-shots at the actor (or non-actor) in service of his star status. The last of the breed of stars who went the other way around, performing in service of their art and thereby paving way for their star status, were Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. And after all these years, we have Vijay Sethupathi, a worthy successor to that trajectory.(more)

Vijay Sethupathi starrer could have been better, but it still works
Despite an engaging screenplay, Seethakaathi just doesn't come together as a cohesive whole. Part of the problem, I think is the core idea. Maybe, I couldn't connect with Ayya. You either connect or you don't. There are no in-betweens. Seethakaathi affects us, impacts us, and attempts to move us. But the attempt isn't wholly achieved.(more)
