Kadavul Irukaan Kumaaru Review - No method in this madness!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

You may like it or not but there is no denying the fact that director Rajesh's films do have his stamp on them. Amidst the numerous comedy clips that do the rounds on television channels you can pick out his scenes if you have been following his films. Kadavul irukaan Kumaaru (KIK) is a step in another direction for him not because of the genre or treatment but simply because this is his first film without Santhanam.

Plot:

Two friends on a road trip and their misadventures.

Rajesh:

Rajesh's films have never been about a core plot which in his case only serves as an excuse to string together a barrage of standalone comedy scenes. KIK is no different but there is an obvious intention here to try out a few things. A road trip, a sort of spoof on television shows and a dash of horror comedy thrown in does alienate KIK a little from the director's earlier films. But the execution leaves a lot to be desired. A joke works and then we sit through the rest waiting for the next good joke. Eccentricity, madness or whatever you call it is fine but there certainly needs to be some method to all this.

Cast:

It is really difficult to evaluate GV Prakash as an actor. But he does have a unique presence in a way that is again quite difficult to explain. But he has a 'certain' presence that these films try to capitalize on. RJ Balaji makes you laugh. But the frequency of laughter is what could be a problem. Sometimes you laugh at his craziness and sometimes it comes across as hamming. It is definitely good to see PrakashRaj in a lighthearted film after sometime. While he is adequate his presence does not lift this film.

The team is certainly in sync with the latest happenings with everything from Ambani's Jio, the beep song, refusal to comply with a Supreme court verdict and custodial death finding its way in the dialogues. But the jokes dry up too often and there is a jaded feeling throughout. However silly they might have been, Rajesh's earlier films were a little natural in the sense that there was a certain believability in the stupidity of the characters. But here most of them look either laboured or contrived. Not sure if this is because of a drop in the performance of the actors or because of the fact that we have grown bored of the recycled jokes.

Bottomline:

Kadavul Irukaan Kumaaru is a laboured effort to make you laugh. If you enjoyed Rajesh's earlier works this one might be tolerable at best.
