10 Endrathukulla Review - Premature Act

10 Endrathukulla is written and directed by Vijay Milton, produced by AR Murugadoss, The film features Vikram and Samantha in the lead roles. After "I", Vikram is back with the aim of serving a commercial cocktail entertainer. Vijay Milton after his earnest "Goli Soda" has gone mainstream to please the masses.

Story, Screenplay and Direction

It is becoming a pattern to see many promising directors when given a chance to direct Vikram, end up messing it up with a half-baked mass movie lacking conviction. The latest to join this list is Vijay Milton, who goes completely berserk as the story unwinds in this road trip movie.

Vijay Milton has come up with an incredulous story padded with all the extra dose of usual Tamil masala formula elements -- fights, songs, love scenes, dance routines, etc. The focus here is on the high adrenaline car chase. The concept is loosely inspired from the fast and the furious series. In the Fast and the Furious, the hero builds a 10 second car that can make a quarter mile run in under ten seconds from a standstill start. The title here is based on hero finishing any  job in under 10 seconds.

The story is not engaging enough as it proceeds with some bizarre twists in somewhat unrelateble backdrops and settings. There are some cliched flashback scenes to throw in some sister sentiments. The dialogues are not coherent during the initial portions. But, it gets normal as the movie progresses. The screenplay is weak and hardly ever engaging enough to keep you hooked.

Vikram, Samantha and Casting

Vikram looks great with the right level of ruggedness and casual demeanor. Vikram sometimes tries too hard to be cool with his swagger. After many months of extreme weight gain and loss in "I", 10 Endrathukulla must have been a walk in the park for Chiyaan. It is a welcome relief to see Vikram not undergoing extreme physical strain in the name of acting.

Samantha has author backed role, in addition to the usual romancing the hero and of course, acting dumb. Samantha provides the comic reliefs, mostly centered on her inept driving skills. Samantha scores with her timing as she throws in a couple of effective double entendres as well. The twist element in the climax involving Samantha appears forced and unconvincing. There is a string of caricature villains who doesn't make any impact whatsoever. Pasupathi in a blend of comedy and villain role is the only one who could act.

Music and Technicalities

10 Endrathukulla is filled with average songs made worse through predictable placements in the movie. Charmi's "gaana" song is contrived and follows the old-school Tamil cinema pattern. Imman is not in his form even in his melody track. Vijay Milton's influence behind the camera is evident. The choice of angles and locations in Nepal are interestingly captured. The team has done a lot of hard work in constructing the chase scenes with necessary help from foreign stunt technician, Lee Whitaker. The art department has worked hard in matching the interior sets to exterior locations to ensure continuity. Editing plays a key role in keeping the adrenaline rush in chase movies. Sreekar Prasad's editing is adequate with mix of unexpected angles intercut with ramp shots during chase sequences. Dance movements in "vroom vroom" is mind-numbingly repetitive.

Bottlomline: 10 Endrathukulla is premature in execution.

10 Endrathukkula is mildly engaging and largely uninteresting. The team's hard work in constructive the chase sequences are impressive. However, the movie fails in overall execution.  During pre-production, tightening the story and fine-tuning the script would have gone a long way in accelerating the proceedings.
