Back when actor-politician Vijay was known as 'Ilayathalapathy', Tamil writer-director AR Murgadoss gave him the blockbuster action hit Thuppakki (2012). Arguably the best movie in Vijay's film career, and one of AR Murugadoss' best directions besides Ghajini (2005/2008), Thuppakki was supposed to get a sequel, atleast according to a declaration made by the filmmaker at a awards function in 2018.
Now in 2025, AR Murugadoss awaiting the release of Madharaasi with Sivakarthikeyan on September 5, has made another revealition. "I met Vijay by chance a few months ago. I told him in conversation that we should do Thuppakki 2. This was before his entry in politics, and now his path has changed from cinema. But Thuppakki 2 cannot be made with anyone else. Thuppakki 2 can only be done by Vijay", Murugadoss revealed in an interview.
Thuppakki revolved around an Mumbai-based Indian Army officer, on a mission to track down and deactivate the sleeper cells of a terrorist group, after witnessing and barely escaping a bomb blast executed by them. The film has been remade in Hindi as Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (Akshay Kumar) and Bengali as Game: He Plays To Win to hugely positive responses.
