Retro, the upcoming Tamil film directed by Karthik Subbaraj and starring Suriya, has been creating a buzz ahead of its release. The film, which combines action and romance, is set in the 1980s and marks Suriya’s 44th movie. Pooja Hegde plays the female lead.

The song Kanimaa from the film has gone viral on social media, especially on Instagram reels. Composer Santhosh Narayanan revealed that the song draws inspiration from En Aasai Mythiliye, a popular number from the 2004 film Manmadhan, starring Silambarasan (Simbu) and Jyothika. The original song was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and sung by Simbu and Suchitra.

Santhosh Narayanan said that Kanimaa reflects the musical essence of En Aasai Mythiliye through its instrumentation, sound mixing, and overall style. He also announced that a special video breaking down the song's creation and inspirations will be released soon.

The track features a fusion of contemporary and classical elements, with bass by Naveen Napier, live percussion, traditional instruments like thavil and kanjeera, and vocals by Santhosh Narayanan and The Indian Choral Ensemble. The lyrics are written by Vivek.

The supporting cast of Retro includes Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Sujith Shankar, Karunakaran, Prem Kumar, Ramachandran Durairaj, Sandeep Raj, Murugavel, and Ramya Suresh.

The film is jointly produced by 2D Cinemas (owned by Suriya) and Stonebench (founded by Karthik Subbaraj).
