Actor Suriya, who enjoyed significant commercial success until 2014, ventured into an experimental phase for an extended period. Although the success rate was inconsistent, Suriya's choices were always calculated. It was during this phase, post-2020, that he delivered Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim, films that garnered national attention for their content. Even his brief cameo as Rolex in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s universe (LCU) created a massive impact.
However, both of these celebrated films were direct OTT releases, with no theatrical release. But here's good news for his fans: Suriya is set for 3 theatrical releases over the next 14 months. Kanguva will hit screens this year, followed by films with Karthik Subbaraj and RJ Balaji in 2025.
With Kanguva taking considerable time to complete, Suriya seems to have made a conscious decision to bring back-to-back films for his fans. He has already committed to both RJ Balaji’s and Subbaraj’s films, while Vaadivaasal has been delayed, and some reports suggest it may be unofficially dropped.
Kanguva Postponement – A Blessing in Disguise
Fans may be disappointed with the repeated postponements of Kanguva, but large-scale films like this often face delays, especially due to the extensive time needed for CGI and quality checks. The latest delay has given the team ample time to work on the 3D aspects, which will boost the film's revenue. It’s set to be the first Tamil film to release in 3D after 2.0. Currently, 80% of the 3D work is done, and once that is completed, the background score will be finalized to sync with the visuals. After that, the film will head for censor clearance, with no further delays expected.
Another single is planned for release next week, followed by an audio launch on October 20.
Additionally, with such a large-scale project, the makers are carefully selecting a release date that ensures maximum reach. A random date could result in revenue loss, and the Kanguvaa team is doing its best to avoid that.
Karthik Subbaraj – Suriya 44
Suriya has already completed his portions for Karthik Subbaraj’s film. The team is aiming for a Pongal 2025 release, and after the full wrap-up, they will fix an exact date. The film is expected to release in the first half of 2025.
RJ Balaji’s Film
Director RJ Balaji is currently scouting locations, and the first schedule is planned as a single 35-day stretch, set to be completed by the end of this year. A.R. Rahman is composing the music, and if all goes according to plan, the film is expected to release in the second half of 2025.
