3D Visuals is the Only Saving Grace of this Mockery Material
The grandness, immense effort from Suriya, the astounding look and feel go in vain due to the poor content. There is a vision to deliver something big, nothing is possible without a worthy substance.(more)

Suriya-starrer has great ideas, but sub-par execution spoils it
That said, Kanguva looks beautiful on screen, thanks to lensman Vetri Palanisamys stunning visuals. The contrast between the worlds of different clans and the overall mood is well captured. Kanguva is truly a lost opportunity for a film with such ambitious ideas. Had Siva delved much deeper into Kangas background, his family dynamics, and focused more on the period portions and the power struggle among the five clans, it could have been a much more effective film. Sadly, many filmmakers today are bitten by the sequel bug. Here, theres a cameo that hints at a sequel. But does every film need a sequel? That is a question every filmmaker should ask.(more)

Suriya Impresses In A Fantasy That's Confused and Convoluted
Even the villain (Bobby Deol), who rules the enemy village has four sonsbut we never get the time to know or understand them. Add to this, the sequences set in the present timeline, which teems with jokes that dont land and outdated writing, there is so much you wish the makers had avoided. Even as you love the central characters in the past, you wish the film had focused only on one timeline and let the frames and the characters breathe a little more. Its ambitions go unnoticed in its mess of convoluted and confused writing choices.(more)

Its Intent On Being The Tamil Baahubali And KGF Remains Untapped
All of the spotlight is on Suriya in a dual role. The hoary avatar that he dons works infinitely better than the contemporary one. That reflects the film as a whole: Kanguva is like two separate films, with the past weighing heavy on the present in more ways than one. Kanguva is a visual treat enhanced by the star's tremendous screen presence. If only the script had more to it than just the sensory and the visceral, this would have been a film fully deserving of the sequel that is in the works. (more)

Suriya's performance is 'stellar', but film is 'hard to sit through', say fans
Kanguva sees Suriya play a warrior from the past with the titular name and a contemporary man called Francis in the present. Bobby also plays a warrior in the past, while Disha plays his love interest in the present. If the films trailer is anything to go by, it is a tale of reincarnation with a child at the centre of it all. With shows in Tamil Nadu beginning at 9 am, it remains to be seen if the film will receive better reviews later in the day.(more)

A fiery Suriya headlines Siva's damp squib of a film
The Kanguva equivalent of Why Kattappa killed Baahubali? with the pop-culture aficionado in me hoping for an Assassins Creed-y climax we get an ending that proves how sequel-baiting has become a panic-inducing trend. With a story that banks too much on its period portions, and assures a far more promising storyline in future titles, Kanguva offers very little to enjoy at the present.(more)

High-voltage action drama that works only in parts
Kanguva is a period action and emotional drama that features some impressive action sequences and emotional scenes. Especially Suriyas power-packed performance, the surprising elements in the climax, and top-notch technical standards by the team make Kanguva a high-quality magnum opus. But the routine screenplay, slow narration of a few scenes, and the love story are not quite impressive. Suriya has succeeded in taking Kanguva to the next level with his superlative performance. On the whole, Kanguva will end up as an entertaining watch only for Suriya fans.(more)
