After a long gap since Irumugan (2016), actor Vikram tasted box-office success with the Ponniyin Selvan flicks in 2022 and 2023. Thangalaan is Vikram's first theatrical release since the PS films, and in that sense, Thangalaan comes as a litmus test for the 58-year-old actor's viability in movie theaters.

The film captures the actual story of KGF years ago, when the Kolar Gold Mine Field was discovered by Britishers, and was exploited and looted by the colonizers, sparking a massive rebellion among the locales.
