Best Tamil Movie Posters - 2023

Publicity design in one of the most relevant departments in the movie business, but with each passing year we witness a decline in the importance being given to it. Kollywood 2023 only gave a handful of creative posters, despite big films being part of this year's roster. Best of Tamil movie posters [of films that released] in 2023 are listed here: 

1.  Farhana [Publicity Design: Sivakumar S (SIVADIGITALART)]
The publicity campaign of Farhana was fresh, innovative and one of the best Tamil cinema - 2023 witnessed. Designer Sivakumar S spelled instant attraction using both elements from film and his own creativity.

Be it the burqa extension turning black halfway, Aishwarya Rajesh's character walking on the edge of a knife, or Selvaraghavan, Aishwarya Rajesh depicted with a radio wave connection - they were all interesting nods to the film's plot.

2. Jailer [Publicity Design: Kabilan Chelliah]
Commercial outings of big actors in Tamil cinema often do not get proper poster designs for a) the fear of setting the wrong expectations b) the lethargy induced by star power. In the crucial days leading upto a film's release, makers of these star vehicles have been hesitant to churn out poster variants in interests of exclusivity. Jailer's publicity campaign exemplarily stood out in this regard. [As did the 2021 campaign of Master].

Simple stills from the movie were turned into impactful posters that kept the buzz going around Jailer's release. The filmmakers and designer Kabilan Chelliah spared no effort in Jailer's poster campaign, and the team deserves a big pat on the back for the same. 

3. Theera Kaadhal [Publicity Design: Aesthetic Kunjamma]

In just two posters, Theera Kaadhal's campaign perfectly encapsulated what kind of a love triangle this movie was going to be. Jai's character placed on the steps that could either walk towards Aishwarya Rajesh or return to Sshivada, and a shadow loom for Aishwarya Rajesh alone were clever nods to major plot points in the movie. 

While Farhana, Jailer and Theera Kaadhal ranked high in terms of creativity and impact, the publicity campaigns of 2023 Tamil releases like Ponniyin Selvan: II, Leo [Gopi Prasanna], Maamannan [Kabilan Chelliah], Jigarthanda DoubleX [Tuney John], Maaveeran, Mark Antony [Siva Kumar S (Sivadigitalart)] were all good too.

Additionally, some interesting designs that caught our attention was the second look poster of Parking [designed by Yellowtooths] and a particular Maamannan poster where Udhayanidhi Stalin and Vadivelu's shadows shared a single head from distant opposites. The Maamannan poster forsehadowed the dynamics between Udhay and his father Vadivelu in the movie, and Parking's design piqued interest in the film.
