Silambarasan TR Vs Vels Film International: Court Case Details

Corona Kumar produced by Vels Film International was supposed to star actor Silambarasan TR in the lead, but the film was dropped due to reasons unknown. Vels Film International which had earlier produced Simbu's Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (2022), has now taken the actor to court wanting him to shoot for Corona Kumar before he begins another project.

Vels Film International claimed that out of an agreed remuneration of Rs. 9.5 Cr, the production house had paid Silambarasan Rs. 4.5 Cr. in advance via bank transcations and cash. However a Madras High Court judge had found back in August, 2023 that a written agreement between STR and the production banner confirms only Rs. 1 Cr. as advance payment. The judge said that rest of the transactions could have been for reasons other than remuneration for the film Corona Kumar, and till Silamabarasan TR files his reply, the producer could be protected only for Rs. 1 Cr.

On September 19, 2023 [Tuesday], Silambarasan TR filed an application to vacate the interim order to provide security for Rs. 1 Cr. The actor told Justice Abdul Quddhose that he is not liable for repayment because the movie was not shot within a year of the advance given to him, as per the written agreement. The Madras High Court judge has adjourned the hearing to vacate the stay, and has given Vels Film International till October 6, 2023 [Friday] to file their reply.
