1. Sai Pallavi: Gargi was touted as a Sai Pallavi show and the actress lived up to every bit of this promise and more. She portrayed the nuance of your everyday middle class girl with such finesse, that one couldn't help but root for the actress, along with her character onscreen.

2. Nithya Menen: Nithya Menen is not a name one regularly sees in Tamil movies but every time she has appeared in one, it has never been disappointing. The actress truly proved her mettle this year by standing out in Thiruchitrambalam, despite sharing screen-space with acting stalwarts like Dhanush, Bharathiraja and Prakashraj.

3. Keerthy Suresh: While Keerthy Suresh had a phenomenal 2022 overall portraying well written characters, her stint in Tamil was the heroine-lead Saani Kaayidham. The movie made less noise since it released directly on a streaming service but Keerthy stunned as the demure yet rage-filled Ponni, who unleashes a killing spree after the gross injustice meted out to her.  Not your everyday character or performance. 

4. Trisha: One of this year's biggest Tamil films - Ponniyin Selvan: Part One had an ensemble of female leads and Trisha was the one who stood out with both her acting and onscreen appeal. Her portrayal of a 10th century acting-matriarch, with a mind of her own yet heart on her sleeve, received praise mainly because of the versatility she brought in from her usual style of performance.

5. Aishwarya Lekshmi: Despite having shorter roles in Ponniyin Selvan I and Gargi, Aishwarya Lekshmi made a mark in 2022. She topped this off with her unabashed portrayal of an ambitious wrestler in Gatta Kusthi, that earned her praises for, once again, standing out among her co-stars.

Special Mention: Dushara Vijayan: Another actor who shined despite the movie's outcome in 2022 was Dushara Vijayan. While her performing ability have always been proved by well-written characters in the past, her portrayal of a hip-Dalit girl who knows what she wants turned out to be the best in her career so far. Pa. Ranjith's Nathchathiram Nagargirathu is a milestone in her career.
