Movies in April 2022: How They've Fared & Where To Watch

The month of April in 2022 has so far been eventful in terms of movie releases both in theaters and on OTT platforms. Among the movies that released in India this month in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, here are a few that made significant impact - negatives and positives included.

1. KGF: Chapter 2 (Kannada)

The biggest hit of April 2022 so far has been this Kannada period action drama KGF: Chapter 2 which was coming off the success of its prequel KGF: Chapter 1 and packaged, delivered as a PAN-Indian release. Compared to its prequel, this Yash starrer which revolves around the fight to power at Kolar Gold Fields did quite well critically. The audience reception too  especially among action/mass movie lovers has been phenomenal for KGF 2. The movie is currently running theaters in theaters Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages. (Review)

2. Taanakkaran (Tamil)

A direct OTT release, Taanaakaaran starring Vikram Prabhu in the lead opened to rave reviews this month. Another period drama but with a police training camp as the background, Taanaakaaran which comes with a sombre story was hailed for its performances and an impressive debut by director Tamizh. The movie can be streamed on on Disney Plus Hotstar (Review)

3. Beast (Tamil)

A common factor that viewers of Beast - both those who liked and disliked the movie agree on is that it could have done with a better screenplay.  In that sense Beast was one of the biggest missed opportunities this April. Nevertheless, the movie  makes for an entertaining watch and it is currently running in theaters. Beast will soon be available to stream on Netfflix and Sun Nxt OTT platforms. (Review)

4. Jersey (Hindi)

Telugu director Gowtham Tinnanuri has returned to direct his 2019 movie of the same name, this time with Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur as his protagonists.  While the story of how an ex-cricketer turns back his life for his son did well in Telugu, its Hindi version has opened to mixed responses. Jersey (Hindi) is currently running in theaters.

5. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (English)

Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage plays a variation of himself in this action comedy and it comes with ample well known performers like Pedro Pascal, Neil Patrick Harris, Tiffany Haddish among others. The story of how 'Nick Cage' an almost broke Hollywood star gets a chance to bring down a crimelord instead of his 'role of a lifetime' is off to a good start. The film is currently running in theaters in India.

6. Sonic: The Hedgehog 2 (English)

Sonic: The Hedgehog is a popular video game that later turned into a successful movie franchise. Part 2 of this film series brings back Jim Carrey in his villainous glory  who has teamed up with Knuckles (Idris Elba) to take over the universe with a powerful emerald. Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his new sidekick Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) team up to stop them and their cat-and-mouse game unfolds in Hawaii this time. A must watch for fans in theaters.

7. Oh My Dog (Tamil)

An out and out kids movie that revolves around the story of a kid and a blind dog, Oh My Dog is the perfect holiday watch for young viewers on OTT. Actors Suriya and Jyotika have produced this film for Amazon Prime Video and it stars Vinay Rai, Arun Vijay, Mahima Nambiar, Vijayakumar and debutant Arnav Vijay among others.

8. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (English)

A spin-off of the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third movie in the Fanastic Beasts film series. The fantasy film which largely banks on the wild popularity of JK Rowling's wizarding world has made some bold political statements this time around. The movie is currently running in theaters in all Indian languages.

9. Manmadha Leelai (Tamil)

Director Venkat Prabhu's 'quick' outing this month was not the adult comedy Tamil viewers expected it to be, but it did deliver some  fun in true Venkat Prabhu styly. The movie with story by Manivannan Balasubramaniam revolves around two acts of adultery by the protagonist, where he comes close to being caught. It is currently streaming on Aha Tamil OTT platform. (Review)

10. RRR (Telugu)

Though RRR released in the last week of March, it is still running in theaters across India competing with the new month releases like no tomorrow. SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan and Jr. NTR left a lasting impression among the cine lovers with their visual extravaganza and this fictional tale of British period revolutionaries will soon be available to stream on Zee 5 and Netflix OTT platforms. (Review)

11. Dasvi (Hindi)

Another direct OTT release this month, Dasvi starring Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautham and Nimrat Kaur addressed a very real topic - the importance of education. The movie is inspired from real life former Haryana Chief Minister who was arrested for a recruitment scam and used his jail time to give his 10th exams. Despite the solid performances and funny satire, Dasvi opened to mixed reviews. The movie makes for a good one-time watch and is currently streaming on Netflix and Jio Cinemas.
