Mani Ratnam's upcoming period drama Ponniyin Selvan was until recently, believed to be beginning its next schedule in June, 2021. The crew was planning on shooting in Madhya Pradesh but it is being suggested that those plans have been altered.

Owing to the COVID-19 surge across the country Mani Ratnam had supposedly decided on shooting Ponniyin Selvan's in Chennai itself. However the city too is one of the worst affected metros in India and looks like the team remains undecided on the movie's next filming location. 

70% of Ponniyin Selvan's shooting is complete and currently post-production is going on for those portions. The movie plans to release for Pongal in January, 2022 and comes with an ensemble of Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh and Shalini Ajith among others.

A.R. Rahman has composed music for this movie, which is a production venture of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
