Mani Ratnam's two-part magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan is a multi-starrer and one of the actors, Karthi has now revealed that 70% of Ponniyin Selvan's shooting is complete. He has also revealed that the movie plans to release for Pongal next year i.e. January, 2022. 

Karthi made this revelation during the promotions for his latest release Sulthan. Ponniyin Selvan primarily revolves around the three children of King Sundara Chola - Aditya Karikalan (Vikram), Kundavai (Trisha) and the titular character alias Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi). 

Karthi plays Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, a trusted aide and bodyguard to Vikram and love interest of Trisha in the movie. The movie also stars Vikram Prabhu as Karthi's friend Sendhan Amudhan, Aishwarya Lekshmi as Poonguzhali, the boat woman who loves Jayam Ravi but ends up marrying Vikram Prabhu.

Ponniyin Selvan is jointly produced by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies and has A.R. Rahman for music. The film has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing dual roles of Queen Mandakini, Sundara Chola's love interest and her daughter Nandini, the main antagonist of the movie.
