After the humongous success of Diwali releases, Bigil and Kaithi, the theatre business in Kollywood is undergoing a dull phase for over a month starting mid-November. Vijay's Bigil and Karthi's 'Kaithi' which ruled the box office for almost 4 weeks brought in audience in large numbers to the theatres.
The theatre business witnessed a boom in terms of revenue for more than 50 days starting from Suriya's Kaappaan which released on September 20 and continued to flourish with the release of films like SivaKarthikeyan's Namma Veetu Pillai, Dhanush 'Asuran', Vijay's 'Bigil and Karthi's 'Kaithi'.
The momentum has however slowed down with the release of Vishal's Action and Vijay Sethupathi's 'Sanga Thamizhan' which hit the screens on November 15 and failed to make an impact at the Box Office. Dhruv Vikram's debut film 'Adithya Varma' (Nov 22) and Dhanush's long-delayed 'ENPT' (Nov 29) which registered a good start in its opening weekend failed to perform well during the weekdays. The following weeks saw the release of small or lesser known Tamil films like Iruttu, Gundu, Jada, Kalidaas, Champion and Capmaari to name a few. While few fetched good reviews, they failed to bring in footfalls to the theatres.
The trade is hopeful that the release of Karthi's 'Thambi' and Sivakarthikeyan's 'Hero' on December 20 will bring back audience to the empty theatres, ending the long dry spell of Kollywood films at the box office. Both Karthi and Sivakarthikeyan have already tasted box office success this year with Kaithi and NVP. The expectations are high for both the films as Karthi has teamed up with Drishyam / Papanasam fame Jeethu Joseph while PS Mithran of 'Irumbu Thirai' fame has helmed Sivakarthikeyan's film.
Hope both the films win the heart of the audience with their content and conclude the year on a promising note for the Tamil film industry!
