Movies This Week: Rajinikanth's Petta Steals The Show!

The Pongal/Sankranthi weekend is filled with options for those spending their holidays in movie theaters. A look into what are the good options this year:

  • The Second Act (English): Jennefer Lopez's rom-com film has finally made it to theater screens in India and the movie which is about a working executive trying to prove her 'management skills' in a place which prefers education to street smarts, is a light-watch if you are into women's comedy.

  • NTR Kathayanakudu (Telugu): A biographical movie on the life of N.T. Rama Rao who was considered no less than a demi God of an actor/politician, this film which is the part 1 of the two part series comes with the most beans among the Telugu film releases this time. Can be watched once. (Review Here)

  • Viswasam(Tamil): If Yennai Arindhaal was Ajith playing paternal for the classes, Viswasam is him doing the same for the masses. The film might not be a festival delight but it sure is a passable entertainer this holiday season. (Review Here)

  • Petta (Tamil): Petta is a true blue Rajinikanth film with all the elements of a block-buster and has outshone the other holiday releases this season. The movie has been well received by both the audience and critics and tops our recommendation list for a movie theater watch, this Pongal.(Review Here)

  • Uri: The Surgical Strike (Hindi): The film is a fact cum fictional version of India's most successful covert operation till date and the Vicky Kaushal starrer is being lauded among the good war movies made till date. Uri may be predictably patriotic but it is one of the better films released this weekend.

  • F2 (Telugu): F2 is the story of two co-brothers who are regretting marriage and are trying to return to their bachelorhood. The multi-starrer has opened to mixed reviews, with Venkatesh walking away with maximum praise for this film.

  • Vinaya Vidheya Rama (Telugu): Possibly the film with least welcome this Sankranthi, Vinaya Vidheya Rama has been unanimously criticized for lacking one solid plot and being all over the place. The movie has opened to disastrous response this weekend.

  • The Accidental Prime Minister(Hindi): One of the most controversial films this season, clearly because it gives us an inside story of the power politics that happened between Manmohan Singh and the Sonia Gandhi lead Congress, The Accidental Prime Minister has not had many takers either and surprisingly for being tedious, rather than for being a propaganda movie.
